about

Of the Trellis is much more open in its feeling than the previous three tracks. There is never a pulse or a meter in this piece, for example; the speed of phrases is instead indicated with a wavy line. The composition is much clearer, however, in its sections and moment of arrival and departure, i.e. it is written as a kind of storyboard. Dane Rudhyar, a major influence of Mario’s says, “Whole and parts mutually and reciprocally influence and modify each other. . . Wholeness or holism, characterizes the entire process of evolution in an ever increasing measure” (from The Astrology of Personality). The improvisations in this piece have to go start and end in a specific place, and so the approach changes entirely.
