about

This first track establishes right off the bat Tropos’ bold aesthetic: contrast is central, often activated by an element of surprise; there is clarity within every moment but plasticity with regards to the overall shape of a piece. Much of the album deals with the compositional device of a single unison line played by the whole band. Raef takes this feature of Braxton’s music as a starting point. This performance features Laila Smith with the album’s first improvisation. Immediately, an extreme gulf emerges between the feeling of the composed material and this first solo section. But the solo extends the last idea of the composition, as a premise. This piece has a cartoony quality, perhaps reminiscent a Tom & Jerry chase scene. Tropos has a predilection for a strange humor, often begging the question through their music, where do humor and expressive extremes meet and diverge?
