about

This piece also clearly takes the approach of a single unison line. But unlike Braxton’s compositions, here, the composed material aims to balance a metronomic and gestural vocabulary. A written-out rubato that is eventually learned and embodied by the ensemble results from the notational approach. The gestures are evident by the implied speeding up and slowing down of tempo in the compositions. Memory also plays a large part in the composition, as the full composition itself is revealed and altered over time in its numerous statements. Additionally, where Tropos has arrived through improvisation actually informs the way we play the written material. Instead of only allowing the improvisation to be activated by the composition, the composition, too, is alive in each performance and its rendition varies based on the surrounding improvisation. As such, the written and spontaneous overlay, with some folks deciding not to align with the statements of composed sections. These techniques are central to Tropos’ practice and are first revealed on this track.
