Phillip has always viewed this composition as a parodic anthem of centrist politics, which is where it gets its title from. It ends with marching call to action, which leads nowhere… The improvisation atomizes the material of the composition into further smaller and smaller ideas. The attempt here was to take a formal approach closer to a jazz chart—head-solos-head—but put enough variety in the composition to allow the improvisation to draw on many different elements and go in different directions. Braxton’s 23h is the closest model, for this one.
