about

By late summer 2019, we developed a language for playing Braxton’s classic (though too-little known) compositions. The features of this sound are its humor and high-powered energy, sudden radical shifts and extreme contrast, the radically egalitarian contribution of each band member, traversing the grey-area between the soloistic and the collective voice, and lastly, its invitation for detailed listening to hear a wide palette of sounds. Because the original recordings of Braxton’s groups from the ’70s have a distinguished place, we workshopped our interpretations intensively. Though the ink on the page may not ever change, details of of our interpretations are collectively determined through intensive workshopping. Through extended rehearsal time, we discover the specific improvisational vocabulary and formal strategies that define each piece, for us. Though options remain in every performance, the bounds of possibility, though sometimes implicit, are ultimately defined during our time together. The particular Braxton pieces that we picked all have an interesting quality that is unique to Tropos. This group approaches this music in a way where they value contrast and evolution of the piece rather than showcasing their individual technical prowess. We always choose to work together as a unit, that is to say, without “specific ensemble roles”. We picked these pieces because they allowed us or pushed us to achieve these ensemble-goals.
